 Interview Questions

So when did you become a musician, and would you say it was the ideal path to take?

Because I was born into a musical family, becoming a musician was not something I even thought about. It is in my blood. I knew I wanted to make music my career at the early age of 5 years old. I know that being a professional trumpeter and school band director is my calling.

Who are the jazz influences that inspired you?

You know, I started off with singing & playing the guitar, but then I saw Louis Armstrong playing the trumpet & that decided it for me. When I spoke to my mom, she said that my uncle had an old trumpet that he used to play and once I had cleaned it out, my fate was sealed. Some of the other jazz influencers were Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis & Clark Terry. And, you know I actually had the honor of playing with Clark Terry.

How was Northeastern State University?

It was a great university to attend at that time. I received my undergraduate degree in music performance there.

How did it feel when you met the O'Jays and the Temptations?

What a huge honor to meet and perform with the O’Jays and the Temptations. Such talented and outstanding musicians, but very humble and down to earth.

If you could be anything else other than a musician what would it be, and why?

Never thought about being anything else except being a musician, entertainer and trumpeter.  My other passion is teaching band.

Was it difficult to be a music director at Edison Middle School?

No, I loved being a band director at Edison Middle School because I loved teaching band and to know that I could possibly be instrumental in the development of the next big musical genius. I loved passing on my knowledge of music to these young enquiring minds.

How did you adjust, to make a living in the music industry with the new direction it has taken?

Change is constantly happening and the music industry is always evolving and we have to change and evolve with it. Obviously, during this pandemic, we have once again had to adapt and change the way we do things while socially distancing. But I still promote & market my music through social media and recording. I have been giving private trumpet lessons online and some private gigs here and there. Hopefully, we can get back to live entertainment soon.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My wife; she was the one who encouraged me to start writing music and then to record it, which lead to 4 CDs; Dream Catcher, Nothing Between Us, Do That Thang & Joyous Celebration with David McLorren and several single tracks.

So, if you had to describe your music in one sentence, what would it be?

Sam Hankins music offers up a fresh, unconventional, innovative and exhilarating vibe with his super melodic trumpet sound.

Via Ripa Is The Vibe You Need Right Now

Guitar sweeps, feel good times, fuzz rock, and smooth jazz all mixed in one immense EP from NJ locals Via Ripa. We'll start off with "Nicotine", the records intro track. This track gets you moving straight out of the gate. You know you're in for a damn good time as soon as that wavey guitar starts up. The band has a punk rock enthusiasm and slamming drums as well which does them even more justice. "Fingertips" is another that shows the unique and warming sound of Via Ripa. After a song like "Fingertips" you can't help but want more. "Bath Ave" is a slight stray from the rock style of the others but damn does it play well. Much more of a light hearted style. A front-man that's super on point and a band that has an obvious love for playing, viap Riap is fun sounds from a fun band! Check Via Ripa as soon as humanly possible.

Yemily Moves You With "Goodbye"

Singer-songwriter Yemily has a lot of attributes that work well for her, and performing heartfelt piano ballads is her shining point. The new "Goodbye" single shows her emotionally driven power as a songwriter. Drawn from a chapter in her life, you can hear the reaness in the track. A passionately performed, raw and touching song that stands tall amongst the crowd as something you can actually relate to, and something that can move you. With an upcoming EP release around the corner, "Goodbye" seems to be a glimpse of what's to come from Yemily, and we're excited about it. One of the best ways to check this song out is via YouTube which you can watch right here

Shake It Lous by Cyzle Blessed

Cyzle Blessed gets the crowd moving with her new single "Shake It Lous". The club anthem is energized and she certainly pushes the tone with her swagger and style. The Chicago born MC first hit the scene in 2003 when she connected with Jam Gospel Group and shared the stage with Yolanda Adams and Shirley Ceasar.

Having influences of Busta Rhymes and Kelly Rowland, she is a force to be reckon with. As a writer/lyricist, Cyzle Blessed has released several mixtapes which gain the attention of J. Green and Jakal Beats. Her award winning songs shows that she has the talent to make it big in this industry. When the Flyah team ran across her submission, we were caught by surprise and instantly blown away by the party driven single. The instrumentation of Shake It Lous reminds me of Nicki Minaj's Anaconda, which is a great thing because it's packed with fun and thrill.

Listeners will have no choice but to get up and move to the uptempo masterpiece. The lyrics are very relative and this song has the potential to become a young person's favorite. Another original thing I like is the spelling of the song and the uniqueness of her stage name. Check out this song in the video below.

You're My Destiny by Robert Eskridge

Born on November 10th 1968, Robert Eskridge, the Delaware native, was designed for Country music. Graduating from Morehead State University, Robert was a 3 time national champion in cheerleading. Getting his start by playing music in local bars at age 16, he exhibited pure confidence. By his adult ages, he had played in many bands in Kentucky and began working with many record labels in Nashville.

After the birth of his first child, his priorities changed and he focused on his career outside of music,  but still performed locally for the next 25 years with his band Southern Daze. Today he arrives with the new album entitled Simple Things with the hit single, "You're My Destiny".  This country ballad expresses a love for a spouse and an announcement for his passion to make sure his point gets across. Lyrics like "Reminded of memories, I'm filled with joy" reflects on time spent with such a wonderful person. In life, we can be overwhelmed and with today's issues we sometimes forget to spread the love required to make your partner feel that same connection.

This song brings attention to the smaller things that are worth cherishing. The instrumentation is smooth with an easy listening sound that guides you through the composition without error. If you're looking for a well polished Country music love ballad that can lift your spirits to a higher place, Robert Eskridge definitely provides it with this song. Keep Your Love to Yourself by Eileen Carey

Eileen Carey presents herself in a very professional manner. With many accolades such as achieving the AC/Hot AC Female Artist of the Year Award to Los Angeles Music Awards Live Country Music Performer in 2017, she shows no signs of slowing down. Eileen excels in the art of storytelling with a style that graces the world radiantly. Her voice stands out in the over-saturated music industry due to her accent and heavenly tone.

When first hearing the fantastic single, "Keep Your Love to Yourself", I was instantly blown away by the mixture of Pop sounds with Electro transitions while keeping the Country sound active. Although the lyrics describes confidence while being in a toxic relationship, the easy listening song can soothe the listener on an evening walk or relaxing at home. In the opening bars, Eileen elaborates with the commonly used metaphor "Light at the end of the Tunnel" depicting the lack of hope. Sometimes in life, people can be controlling and demanding but it's up to you to have the strength to say no.

Eileen moves gracefully across the instrumental with polish lyrics expressing the choices to fight for her piece at mind. I love the mixing of the instruments and the piano is inspirational while the drums bring the deepness setting the tone of survival. Eileen paints a picture very well. She brings you into the mindset and allows to you examine the feelings of a person who has enough and knows that the grass is greener on the other side.

If I have to rate this song on the scale of 1 to 10, I would give it a 7 for its awesome storytelling passionate lyrics and blissful ride.
